Full Description
The present Crown Inn replaced an earlier building destroyed by the Great Fire of 1583. It was the most expensive new building costing 3l3 pounds, 13 shillings and 4 pence. In C18 an Assembly Room was added to the rear (1). It is an important late C16 building. Timber framed with plaster infill, it stands three storeys, with a slight jetty at each floor, carried on enriched brackets. The building is close-studded, unlike the contemporary buildings which have a more decorative treatment. Restored mullioned and transomed windows to ground and first storey and a most interesting continuous gallery at second storey, now partitioned internally. Covered passageway leads into the former yard (2).
