Archaeological watching brief undertaken in 1996 during groundworks associated with the construction of a link extension to the rear of 10-16 High Street, Nantwich. The results demonstrated that deep, well stratified archaeological deposits, rich in both organic and ceramic material and datable to the medieval and early post medieval periods, survive. The remains of a well-laid 16th century cobbled surface were recorded; the cobbling appears too substantial to have been laid for used as yard, so is thought to represent a thoroughfare, possibly orientated north-south. A projected line on a north-south alignment from the location of the recorded surface on the 1794 township plan would provide a lane linking the High Street with Pudding Lane, providing an eastern limit for a series of narrow tenement plots shown of the plan between Pudding Lane and the Saltworks. An earlier pit was also recorded along with a ditch feature thought to potentially relate to the Castle moat (see 179/2).
