Full Description

Nineteenth century cast-iron baluster type bollards with mushroom caps (1). Four 19th century cast iron bollards with 'crown' shaped heads and a lampost of similar date located on the pedestrian access from Church Lane to the main door of St Mary's Church, east of the Council Offices. The bollards are set in cobblestones, painted black and showing only minor signs of flaking or chipping. Bollards measure 0.9m high and 8" diameter. Conversation with one of the churchwardens suggests that this line of 4 posts and the lamppost have been in this position since the 1980s. These posts are ‘crown topped’ as opposed to ‘mushroom’ capped. All 4 posts & lamp post appear to be contemporary structures and posts are of the same cast iron design (2 & 3). The two mushroom capped post have probably been relocated to the easternmost of the the two paths to the north of the church (see CHER 4588) (4). These are probably modern reproductions (5).
