A watching brief during the renewal of gas main works in 2007 revealed significant medieval archaeological deposits at the southern end of Wych House Bank, a lane that runs perpendicularly south from Welsh Row. Deposits containing containing organic material and a small quantity of medieval pottery sealed a layer with dumped fragments of well-preserved timber, including three fragments of barrel top/base measuring up to 0.84m in length and 0.4m wide, along with several fragments of timber planking and probable wattle-work. The barrel and timber fragments lay directly upon a layer of dark greyish brown silty clay containing compressed organic material, wood fragments and charcoal. A number of wooden stakes protruded from this layer and a small quantity of medieval pottery sherds were retrieved from it. This deposit was not excavated and its depth was therefore not established.
