Summary

Excavations at the Crown Car Park site produced a total of just under 200 sherds of Roman pot. No Roman features were uncovered but at the time was the largest sample of Roman pottery from Nantwich with 34% fine wares. There was also some roof tile which indicates the close proximity of Roman settlement. None of the pottery suggests occupation before AD.100 and main activity would seem to be from the early 3rd century to the mid 4th century. A Coin of Julia Domna (wife of Septimius Severus) was also found here,

Excavations at the Crown Car Park site produced a total of just under 200 sherds of Roman pot. Came from the terraced area at north end of the site. No Roman features but largest sample of Roman pot from Nantwich. 34% fine wares. Some roof tile. Indicates close proximity of Roman settlement

Residual pottery in both Wood Street and Crown Car Park excavations confirms that the nucleus of Roman industrial activity is located on Snow Hill.
