Monument record 177/0/8 - Roman pottery excavated from Crown Car Park

Excavations at the Crown Car Park site produced a total of just under 200 sherds of Roman pot. Came from the terraced area at north end of the site. No Roman features but largest sample of Roman pot from Nantwich. 34% fine wares. Some roof tile. Indicates close proximity of Roman settlement

None of the pottery suggests occupation before AD.100 and main activity would seem to be from the early 3rd century to the mid 4th century. Coin of Julia Domna found

Residual pottery in both Wood Street and Crown Car Park excavations confirms that the nucleus of Roman industrial activity is located on Snow Hill.
