Summary

A row of Grade II listed almshouses dated 1767. There are 7 houses, all built of red brick and 2 storeys high. In 1767 John, first Lord of Crewe erected and endowed the almshouses for married men with families, preferably decayed tradesmen.

Crewes Almshouses, Beam Street, dated 1767. A row of 7 houses. Red brick, 2 storeys, central projection finished as pediment with circular panel, stone cornice. 12 sash windows with stone lintels, keyblocks, and sills. 6 doorways in stone surrounds, 6 panelled central door with arched fanlight & keyblock. Central stone tablet with carved inscription & date 1767. Hipped slate roof. Restored 1975-6.

In 1767 John, first Lord of Crewe diverted a charity from Sir John and Sir Thomas Crewe, by erecting and endowing an almshouse in Beam Street for married men with families, preferably decayed tradesmen.

The Crewe Almshouses were built in 1767 on the site of a house of correection, formerly the family home of the Mainwairings, using money left for the poor of Hospital Street, specifically, 'for seven Decayed Tradesmen'.

Crewes Almshouses were established by John Crewe according to the wishes in the wills of Sir Thomas Crewe Knight and Sir John Crewe Knight. The building contained seven dwelling units, was two-storeys with a hipped, slate roof. The building is well proportioned and stands in a commanding position facing Coronation Gardens at the east end of Beam Street.
