<3> Ray, J., 1991, Finds from the new extension to the Kiltearn Medical Centre, Hospital Street, Nantwich, Cheshire (Unpublished Report). SCH7373.

Report for an excavation undertaken in March 1991 by John Ray at the site of the new extension to the Kiltearn Medical Centre, Hospital Street (a site on which he had done a small excavation in 1976, see sources 1 and 2). The site at the rear of Williams Chemist would have been the back yard to one of the timber-framed houses that lined Hospital Street before the Great Fire which occurred 10/12/1583 in which 600 buildings were destroyed. Also on the site were stables and a smithy belonging to Kiltearn House, originally dating to the 17th century but partially rebuilt in the 18th century. A rubbish pit and dumped material including mussel shells was recorded, associated with a piece of Midland yellow pottery sherd from a medicine jar (1550-1650). The rubbish pit was waterlogged and contained numerous finds including wine bottles, leather shoe soles, wooden stakes, animal bones, skulls and horns and pottery (purple ware, slip ware, mottled ware, shiny black ware, yellow ware and cistercian ware). A total of 594 pot sherds were recovered. A fragment of medieval tile was also found.
