Summary

During the course of tunnelling for a drainage under the Cheshire Cat Car Park in the 1980's, a massive wooden structure was excavated. It was about 2ft wide and lined with thick vertical oak planks set against a framework of squared timbers. It may be as early as 12th century. The feature ran perpendicular to Welsh Row and it was filled with a black deposit. It may correspond to a large brine cistern shown on a map of 1624 which was used as storage for the adjacent salt-houses. Earlier work in the carpark aslo revealed timbers at a similar depth.
