Full Description
3 bollards on the northside of St Mary's Church's churchyard. Nineteenth century cast-iron baluster type with mushroom caps (1). Two pairs of 19th century cast iron bollards with 'mushroom' shaped heads located on two pedestrian accesses from Churchyard Side to the main door of St Mary's Church. The easternmost pair are set into sandstone flagstones and the western pair set in cobbles and concrete. Bollards measure 0.9m high and 6.5" diameter. The sturdy structures are painted black and show only minor scratches probably inflicted by passing bicycles. Conversation with one of the churchwardens indicates that there were 3 posts on the western of the two paths, in the position of CHER 4588. The middle post, which was taller, was removed to widen the access. The two posts on the easternmost path were apparently in that position since the 1980s period also. All 4 existing posts are contemporary and of the same cast iron design (2 & 3). The two posts on the eastern path are probably those that were originally located to the south of the church at the end of Church Lane see CHER 4589 (4).
