Description
Parent event record for interventions and excavations in Roman Northwich (Condate), from 1967, by the University of Manchester Archaeological Unit (G.D.B.Jones, M.Nevell), South Trafford Archaeology Group (P.Reynolds, D.Pierce), Northwich Archaeological Group (B.Curzon, J.S.Dent), and more latterly, Cheshire Archaeology Planning Advisory Service. There are limited sources for the earlier excavations (1967-70), the main source being an article in The Archaeological Journal, 1971 (source 1). The later excavations (1970's - 1990s) are documented in the University of Salford (Centre for Applied Archaeology), 2016, 'Rediscovering Roman Northwich. Phase 1: Assessment of the Archaeological Archive' (source 2).
See the 28 linked event records for details on individual interventions and associated reports/sources.
Sources 3-14 include other sources for the excavations, including those produced wholly by, or in conjunction with, G.D.B Jones. These include letters about some of the excavations, press releases and, siginificantly, notes that Prof Jones produced in 1992 for a lecture given to Cheshire Archaeology day (Source 7, SCH3820, 'The Last Hurrah') which expressed some of his interpretations about Roman Northwich using the excavated evidence which are not expressed elsewhere in written form.
Source 14, 'Condate Castellum', by B.Curzon of the Northwich Archaeology Group, is his interpretation of Roman (and later) Northwich using the excavated evidence. It contains photographs of some of the earlier excavations for which there is limited archival evidence.
