Description

Excavated by Prof Barri Jones , University of Manchester in 1978. A long single narrow evaluation trench ahead of House construction to the east of Ryder Street. In the document (SCH3820, source 2) this site has three names. Harrisons Place, Lions Walks and Ryder Place but they are all the same site. The evaluation trench located the eastern ditch and rampart (later revetted with stone), inter vallum road and cutting this a round hut. No interim report located. Finds archive in Cheshire Museums. (1) In 1978, the north side of Chester Road produced evidence of a rampart with a secondary stone revetment in the Ryders Place redevelopment. Well preserved stratigraphy also made it clear there was a period of abandonment between the two military occupations of the site, occupations that appeared to end sometime in the first half of the second century AD. (2) See also source 3 During the excavation of a drain at Harrison’s Place, part of a lead salt pan was found by workmen and given to G.D.B. Jones; the personal name Veluvius is cast into the side (see CHER 719/0/9, ECH2369).
