Description
Excavated by Prof Barri Jones, University of Manchester and Paul Reynolds, South Trafford Archaeological Group. May 1989. Three trenches were dug to the west of Ryder Street and north of the Bowling Green/Castle Court area prior to development for housing. These were located in an area of allotments (trench 2 and 3) and on the site of a former garage (trench 1), with the aim to locate the north-western defences of the Roman fort, first discovered in 1983 during the Bowling Green excavations. The north-western fort ditch was located, along with a second ditch circa 25m outside of the main ditch. Evidence of Roman buildings was also recorded.
An interim report was written but not published (Reynolds 1989, source 2). The excavation archive is held by Cheshire Museums. (1-4)
Letter (17/04/1989) from G.D.B. Jones to house-holder about the potential of excavation in Ryders Street to find the north-west defences of the Roman fort. Includes annotated plan showing proposed trench location. (5)
