Summary

The Borough of Macclesfield was founded around 1220 by Ranulf Blunderville, 6th Earl of Chester and Lord of the Manor of Macclesfield. The original charter established 120 burgesses (citizens of the borough), each paying 12d pa to Earl. Rights of burgesses including self-government, courts of justice, markets and fairs, exemptions from all tolls, except those on salt, feudal dues freedom and the right to form merchant guilds. A borough is a town governed by a corporation and having a range of privileges defined by a charter or royal statute. Burgesses are Burgage plots in the Borough had street frontage or around 10 metres and were laid out on main steets of Chestergate, Mill St and facing Market Place.Each burgage held an acre of land within surrounding townfields and moss room in Dane's Moss to provide peat for fuel. Large landowners and gentry combined plots to build large town houses

Full Description

Borough of Macclesfield founded c.1220 by Ranulf Blunderville, 6th Earl of Chester & Lord of Manor of Macc. Sited N of manor & bounded by River Bollin to E & steep natural slopes to N & S. Orig charter est 120 burgesses, each paying 12d pa to Earl. Rights of burgesses incl self-governmnt, courts of justice, markets & fairs, exemptions from all tolls, except those on salt, fuedal dues freedom & right to form merchant guilds. Burgage plots in Borough had st frontage of c.10m & were laid out on main sts-Chestergate, Mill St & facing Market Place, & minor sts, such as Dog Lane, Church St & Back Lane. Each burgage held an acre of land within surrounding townfields & moss room in Dane's Moss to provide peat for fuel (1). Large landowners & gentry combined plots to bld large town houses (eg 1563/3; 1563/0/6;1563/0/15), & others now unlocated, eg Stapleton Hall, nr Town Hall, residence of Stapleton family (now demolished), Ogden Hall (passed to Swettenhams of Somerford Booths) & Pickford Hall (2&3).
