Full Description
The Gaol was situated somewhere on Dog Lane (Stanley Street) and is first mentioned in 1290. It probably stood on a burgage plot on the south side. The De Mottrum family were the hereditary gaolers of Macclesfield (1). Prisoners from all the courts, both for the town, forest and hundred, appear to have been sent to this gaol. Another gaol for debtors was situated near the Market Place (2).
