Summary

Grade II* listed building. It was originally a timber framed courtyard house dating from the late 16th or early 17th century. It belonged to the Stopford family, ancestors of the present Earl of Courtown. The building, although much altered with a 19th century front, has been an inn for a very long period and is the oldest in the area to have survived. The front block has been rebuilt and the interior modernised, but some old features remain, including good moulded ceiling beams and an ealry 17th century heavy oak staircase. It is one of only two buildings in Macclesfield that retain features of a medieval townhouse,

Full Description

Bate Hall Hotel (Public House), Chestergate. Originally a 'black & white' courtyard house, probably late C16 or early C17, belonging to the Stopford family, ancestors of the present Earl of Courtown. The building, although much altered, has been an inn for a very long period and is the oldest in the area to have survived. The front block has been rebuilt and the interior modernised, but some old features remain, including good moulded ceiling beams in righthand portion, which extend across covered-way; also good early C17 heavy oak staircase. Early C19 front with later alterations. Two stone mullioned windows in rear wall with iron lattice glazing. Full architectural description (1).
