Full Description
During September and October 1987 a 5 week excavation was undertaken in the area of the Town Hall car park, 40m from street frontage of Jordangate/Market Place. Area of excn 75 sq m. Earliest structures represent E end of building occupying site of the present open market. A gully (possibly a drain) & rubbish pits cut layers containing 16th C pottery. Latest building structures identified represent the W end of the 18th C Shambles, a covered market. Demolished & levelled 1939. Extensive late medieval layer and early post medieval layer suggests that there was activity in these periods nearby. Pottery suggests no activity earlier than the 15th C, suggesting the area may have been truncated, although it may have been open in the medieval period (1).
