Abstract/Summary
A detailed Ordnance Survey town plan of Macclesfield. The Ordnance Survey surveyed at the 1:500 scale from 1855-1895, covering towns with a population of over 4,000. The 1:500 scale Town Plans tended to extend to the edge of built up areas rather than to any municipal boundary and were initiated in order to lay out any improvements needed to drainage and water supplies. They show a huge amount of detail and it is possible to find individual lamp posts, trees, water pumps and other street furniture. The town plan for Macclesfield was surveyed between 1870 and 1871.
