Description
An excavation carried out at Frodsham St. in 1966, to the south of the Frodsham St. car park, revealed a sequence of archaeological deposits from Roman, to medieval, to the post-medieval period (5). Seven trenches were excavated, although Trenches 1 and 3 were joined and effectively became a single large trench. At the time, the results of the excavation went unpublished, however, following a desk-based assessment concerning the Frodsham St. Car park in 2011, Earthworks Archaeological Services examined the original excavation archive held at the Grosvenor Museum, and published a review of the material as an appendix to their desk-based assessment (5). The 1966 excavations impacted post-medieval features and deposits, in addition to a smaller number of medieval features. Roman features, including an in-situ part of the fortress wall, were recorded at the base of their trenches, but do not appear to have been excavated (5).
