Full Description
Excavations carried out in 1966 on the land to the south of the Frodsham Street Car park, uncovered extensive features relating to the Roman Fortress, including an in-situ section of the fortress' masonry wall (1).
The excavations consisted of six trenches including two at right angles to and abutting the City Walls (trenches 1 & 2) at the northwest and southwest corners of the site. The evidence from Trench 1 close to the Drum Tower and consisted of the rubble stone foundation set in a trench approximately 1.80m wide and 0.90m deep. Above this the remains of the wall consisted of several courses of large sandstone blocks separated from the foundations by a thin layer of sand. Evidence of compression and some tilting was also recorded in the superstructure as a result of the weight of the wall. (2)
The date of construction of the stone revetment wall is disputed. It is possible that the southern and eastern sectors were started at the beginning of the second century, along with the towers, but that remaining sectors were not completed until the early third century. Evidence of two phases of reconstruction incorporating re-used stones has been found on all but the south side, accompanied in some cases by rubble in the ditch. It is suggested that reconstruction to the original width is to be dated to the start of the fourth century, but that doubling of the width may belong to the Saxon period.
