Full Description
Canal Port on the River Mersey at north end of the Ellesmere (later Shropshire Union) Canal, opened 1796. Series of docks and warehouses built in mid and late C19, with special period of development by Thomas Telford and William Corbitt 1830-43. Peak oftraffic before Manchester Ship Canal was built through to Eastham in 1894. Restored as the North West Museum of Inland Navigation (1). Full documentary history (2). The following buildings are listed Grade II - Lock to Lower Basin, Porters Row Cottages, Dock Office, Toll House, Island Warehouse, Boiler and Pump Houses, etc., Locks between Upper and Lower Basins, Pattern Shop, Canal Stables, Former Gasworks, etc., Lime Shed and Iron Shed (3). Also listed Grade II is the Clay Warehouse NGR 4044 7730 (4).
