Summary

A fragment of a Roman lead salt pan with the personal name Veluvius cast into the side. The brine springs of Cheshire are known to have been worked in Roman times. The discovery of lead salt pans with Roman inscriptions reveals that the Romans were using the open pan method of salt production. Brine is heated in a shallow pan over low temperatures to create large salt crystals or high temperatures for fine salt.
