Description

Evaluation / excavation at the Habitat car park, and within the building, at the corner of Pepper St. and Volunteer St. Photos supplied by Mike Morris via email show a possible Roman road surface, an ARP shelter, and the find of a human skull was also mentioned. (1) Evaluation carried out in September 2012 at various locations both internally and externally. The results have demonstrated that close to the Pepper Street frontage complex and stratified archaeological deposits and features survive at a shallow, vulnerable depth. Amongst these were a probable Roman road surface, medieval occupation deposits, a possible medieval oven feature and a later medieval or early post medieval cobbled track. Further Roman to post medieval evidence was identified away from the street frontage along with several WWII air raid shelters. (2)
