Full Description
Archaeological excavations at Pepper St. and Volunteer St in 2013 identified Roman features at the base of a complex stratigraphic sequence that included medieval, post medieval and modern remains. A pit (this monument) was found in Trial Pit 2, which cut through a layer of crushed sandstone fragments, and produced large fragment of Roman period brick (1). Also within this Trial Pit, but not within the feature, was an human skull fragment. It was found at the level of natural clay subsoil, and no other evidence of any burials was recovered (1).
