Full Description
Archaeological excavations at Pepper St. and Volunteer St in 2013 identified Roman features at the base of a complex stratigraphic sequence that included medieval, post medieval and modern remains. Part of a Roman period road was identified in Trail Pit 5 at a depth of 1.35m bgl, and was a very well-preserved cobblestone and sandstone surface, incorporating fragments of Roman-period ceramic building material. The surface was interpreted as a road, although its alignment could not be established with certainty, the excavators thought that it was part of the perimeter patrol track which skirted the outer edge of the Roman defensive ditch (1).
