Full Description
Archaeological investigations to the south of Pepper Street in 2013 recorded evidence of post medieval activity including evidence of rubbish pits and possible tanning evidence some distance from the street frontage. Pepper Street itself is 13th century in origin, however Volunteer Street is a 19th century addition.
The evidence comprised a pit [context 105] from trench 1 containing large quantities of pottery and other artefacts of a late 17th century date. A second pit from the same trench [context 110] contained a number of cattle horn cores indicative of tanning activity in the area. A third pit was also identified in trench 1 but contained few finds [context 113]. 17th century deposits were also identified in trench 2.
