Description

This event represents the excavation of fourteen linear evaluation trenches undertaken from October to November 2002 in the Gorse Stacks area of Chester, between Gorse Stacks / George St., and St Oswald's Way. The results showed that a natural depression, up to 3m in depth, occupies much of the eastern half of the area. Some of the layers filling the depression hold some interest, a particularly rich seventeenth century layer forms an upper fill. Truncated Roman features survive elsewhere on the site, overlying natural clay. There is a complex Roman stratigraphic sequence at one location, immediately west of the Ship Victory public house, in addition to a linear medieval feature to the rear of the school.
