Archaeological investigations at the car park on George Street in 2002 identified a buried plough soil of possible Roman date in several of the trenches.
Two areas were excavated – Area A to the south east and Area B to the northwest, with a number of evaluation trenches excavated in each area. Evidence of a truncated plough soil of possible Roman date was encountered primarily Area B to the north west and on the western edge of Area A. A small assemblage of Roman pottery – some 190 sherds - was recovered from across the site.
