Full Description
A possible Roman structure was recorded at Gorse Stacks during archaeological investigations in 2002 and subsequently in 2006.
<1> Earthworks Archaeological Services, 2002, The Area of Gorse Stacks Car Park, George Street, Chester: an Archaeological Evaluation, R3156 (Client Report). SCH6247.
The evidence from the 2002 evaluation comprised a single post hole containing pottery of a late first to early second century date along with a shallow cut feature interpreted as a possible beam slot in trench 8 of the evaluation.
<2> Earthworks Archaeological Services, 2006, Geotechnical boreholes and test pits, Gorse Stacks Development, Chester, R3184 (Client Report). SCH6366.
The evidence from 2006 was recovered from Borehole 4, excavated a short distance to the east of Trench 8 and comprised the stone and ceramic tile packing of a possible post hole. Given its proximity to the earlier finds it is suggested that they belonged to the same structure.
