The local vernacular is terrace stone cottages and individual stone, houses built from the local Kerridge stone contributing to the Pennine village character. The course depth of the stonework diminishes from the ground level up towards the roof. The Conservation Area is divided into three distinct areas, Ginclough (isolated groups of houses and early nineteenth century mill), Rainow village, and Kerridge End (also known as Brookhouse).
