Summary

A former house and stables, now split into two houses. The core of the building dates from the seventeenth century and there are late eighteenth and twentieth century alterations. The building is listed at grade II.

Formerly house and stables, now two houses: seventeenth century core with late eighteenth and twentieth century alterations. Coursed squared buff sandstone rubble. Kerridge stone-slate roof, stone ridge and four stone chimneys. L-shaped plan with added range. Two-storey, three-bay south front. Left two bays have rubble hood moulds over a three-light stone mullion and three twentieth century altered openings. West front shows heavy roof timbers in gable and primitive architrave over six-panelled door to Tower Hill House, and projecting part at left end has two, two-light chamfered stone mullions to the cellar and two windows at the rear. A window with horn used as glazing is reported.

Interior: Holly Tree Cottage has timber-framed partition walls and heavy ceiling beams. Tower Hill has late eighteenth century six-panelled doors, moulded panels in window reveals and two pine panelled cupboards in chimney breast. Dogleg painted mahogany staircase with square balusters under a moulded elliptical opening with panelled soffits. Two chamfered beams in kitchen with flat stops

Names John Upton Gaskell esq. as the proprietor of Tower Hill, an old house formerly belonging to the Savages and the Brocklehurst family.
