The survey covered a total of 162 Ordnance Survey kilometre squares, in two blocks. These are the area between Gnosall and Eccleshall (75 km squares), and two closely situated areas to the north-east and south-west of Kidsgrove (total 87 km squares). The project area overlapped slightly with parts of east Cheshire.

The project mapped and recorded a wide range of archaeological sites of varying nature dating from the Neolithic period to the twenty-first century, highlighted the extensive industrial heritage of north Staffordshire.
