Full Description
<1> See map for surveyor, c.1837-51, Cheshire Tithe Maps and Awards, EDT309/2 1838 (Maps and Plans). SCH3266.
Neither the colliery, wharf or the tramway are depicted or recorded on either the 1839 tithe map and award for Church Lawton township or the 1838 map and award for Astbury township.
<2> Ordnance Survey, 1871-1882, Ordnance Survey County Series (Epoch 1) 25 inch to 1 mile - Cheshire, SJ8456, 1888; SJ8356 & SJ8357, 1873-1888 (Maps and Plans). SCH2462.
The embankments and the cutting associated with the tramway connecting the colliery (CHER 7869/1/0) to the Macclesfield Canal wharf at Scholar Green (CHER 7869/3/0) are extant, but there’s no evidence to suggest that this has any rails laid at this point. Its also notable that this access is depicted as leading to accomodation bridge across the canal, rather than directly to the wharf area (as on 2).
<3> Ordnance Survey, 1896-1898, Ordnance Survey First Revision County Series (Epoch 2) 25 inch to 1 mile - Cheshire, SJ8456, 1899; SJ8356 & SJ8357, 1898-1899 (Maps and Plans). SCH3848.
The tramway is clearly depicted running to the canal wharf at Scholar Green (CHER 7869/3/0). A rectangular building c.15m x 7m is located directly adjacent to the tramway on its north-eastern side and approximately equidistant from the wharf and the colliery.
<4> Ordnance Survey, 1909-1912, Ordnance Survey Second Revision County Series (Epoch 3) 25 inch to 1 mile - Cheshire, SJ8456, SJ8356 & SJ8357, 1909 (Maps and Plans). SCH4361.
This map of 1899 depicts the colliery as disused. The tramway is labelled as a footpath.
<5> Environment Agency, 2003-2020, Environment Agency LiDAR Surveys, 1m DTM composite (Digital Archive). SCH7819.
Earthworks associated with the tramway are clearly visible in the LIDAR data.
<6> AditNow, 2005-, AditNow, www.aditnow.co.uk/Mines/Hall-Olee-Colliery-Coal-Mine_20243/ (11/01/2017) (Web Site). SCH8129.
Reports that the former tramway can be traced from the canal wharf adjacent to the Macclesfield Canal to the site of the colliery. In places the tramway was carried by an embankment, under which is a well preserved brick culvert.
<7> Historic England & Archaeological Research Services, 2015, Staffordshire National Mapping Programme and Lidar Mapping Project: Gnosall, Kidsgrove and Talke, 1593238 (Digital Archive). SCH9202.
A post medieval tramway is visible as earthworks on air photographs and 1 metre resolution lidar centred at SJ 8409 5658. The tramway serves Hall O Lee Colliery (UID 1593239 [see CHER 7869/1/0]) and a second unnamed colliery (UID 1593240 [see CHER 7869/1/1]). The tramway extends to the Macclesfield Canal and was mapped as part of the Staffordshire National Mapping Programme Project. The tramway is also depicted on historic Ordnance Survey mapping. Part of the tramway is extant on the latest 2010 vertical photography [see 9], but much of the earthwork is masked by tree cover (see 3 & 8).
<8> Royal Air Force, 1944-1947, 1940s RAF Aerial Photographs from Operation Review, RAF/CPE/UK/1935 FS 2419 17/01/1947 (Aerial Photograph). SCH8041.
<9> Next Perspectives, 2010, Aerial Photography for Great Britain, Next Perspectives APGB Imagery (2010) (Aerial Photograph). SCH8173.
