Full Description

<1> See map for surveyor, c.1837-51, Cheshire Tithe Maps and Awards, EDT 110/2, 1839; ET309/2 1838 (Maps and Plans). SCH3266.

The colliery is not depicted or recorded on the 1839 tithe map and accompanying award for Church Lawton township or the 1838 equivelent for Odd Rode.

<2> Ordnance Survey, 1871-1882, Ordnance Survey County Series (Epoch 1) 25 inch to 1 mile - Cheshire, SJ8456, 1888 (Maps and Plans). SCH2462.

This map of 1888 depicts a shaft c.10m to the east of the brook adjacent to an area labelled as an old coal pit. The winding house and chimney are clearly depicted to c.20m to the west of the brook. The colliery is accessed by a track leading from Mow lane to the south. The earthworks associated with the tramway (CHER 7869/2/1) connecting the colliery to the Macclesfield Canal wharf at Scholar Green (CHER 7869/3/0) are extant, but there’s no evidence to suggest that this has any rails laid at this point.

<3> Ordnance Survey, 1896-1898, Ordnance Survey First Revision County Series (Epoch 2) 25 inch to 1 mile - Cheshire, SJ8456, 1899 (Maps and Plans). SCH3848.

This map of 1899 depicts a much expanded colliery. Spoil heaps or coal are in evidence either side of the brook, which appears to be culverted for much of its course though the colliery. There are a number of new small buildings and at least one new shaft. The tramway (with sidings at the colliery) sidings are clearly depicted running to the canal wharf at Scholar Green (CHER 7869/3/0). A further straight and partially embanked access (CHER 7869/2/2) links the colliery to the site of an old coal shaft (CHER 7869/1/1) to the south-east, immediately adjacent to Mow Lane. It’s probable that was also a tramway at some point.

<4> Ordnance Survey, 1909-1912, Ordnance Survey Second Revision County Series (Epoch 3) 25 inch to 1 mile - Cheshire, SJ8456, 1909 (Maps and Plans). SCH4361.

This map of 1909 depicts the colliery as disused. The chimney is one of the few buildings which haven’t been demolished. The tramways are labelled as footpaths.

<5> Environment Agency, 2003-2020, Environment Agency LiDAR Surveys, 1m DTM composite (Digital Archive). SCH7819.

A large triangular spoil heap survives on the western side of the brook. A c.10m diameter depression corresponds with the site of an old shaft. Other shafts are visible to the north and east.

At the colliery site are the remains of a tramway junction and the winding house.

A post medieval colliery is visible as earthworks on air photographs centred at SJ 8411 5656. The colliery named Hall O Lee Colliery is comprised of a shaft and shaft mound either side of a tramway connecting the colliery with the Macclesfield Canal (recorded separately in UID 1593238 [see CHER 7869/2/1 & 7869/2/2]). The colliery was mapped as part of the Staffordshire National Mapping Programme Project and is also depicted on historic Ordnance Survey mapping [see 2, 3, & 4]. Part of the site is extant on the latest 2010 vertical photography [see 16], but much of the earthworks are masked by tree cover. (see 3 & 17).
