The ditch forming part of the north-western defences of the fort was seen in two sections, one in the trench in the allotments and the other in the trench in an area of garages, located on the north-east side of Ryders St. Both sections revealed the same inner ditch line, predictable from subsidence in houses in nearby Queensgate. Environmental samples were taken from the waterlogged sump of the 2.5m wide ditch, which appears to have been reinforced by a small primary external ditch 25m further north.

Three trenches were dug to the west of Ryder Street and north of the Bowling Green/Castle Court area prior to development for housing. These were located in an area of allotments (trench 2 and 3) and on the site of a former garage (trench 1), with the aim to locate the north defences of the Roman fort, first discovered in 1983 during the Bowling Green excavations. The north fort ditch was located along with evidence of Roman buildings to the north of this.

Interim report by Paul Reynolds (South Trafford Archaeological Group) on the three trenches excavated in the Ryder Street area in 1989.
