Description
Excavations revealed stratified Roman remains sealed beneath Georgian landscaping, structures and a toilet block. Evidence for several phases of Roman buildings road surfaces all respecting an existing palaeochannel and demonstrating occupation throughout the Roman period, probably related to both the nearby known Roman Port and Cannabae Legionis.
Post –Roman occupation, the site appears to have been an unsettled landscape, with a suggestion of arable land-use from numerous plough scars. The Roman channel was subsequently used as an open sewer in the medieval period. This landscape was then buried by Georgian landscaping and building construction with St Martin’s Lodge and adjacent coach house and toilet block.
No detailed trench location plan provided and areas digitised are general.
