Full Description
Excavations at St Martin's Lodge in 2013 revealed a section of a partially robbed out sandstone wall (1). The dating of the wall is uncertain, but the excavation report includes it within its Phase IV (post-Roman) description as a massive sandstone wall (context 309) that was parallel to an earlier Roman wall but stratigraphically later than it. It was built on context (300) which was reported to have been a possible medieval cultivation soil (with 13th to 14th century finds), Phase V (1). The wall does not appear to relate to any of the Benedictine nunnery boundaries, and because it is parallel to earlier Roman drainage features, it was suggested that the wall is a later drainage feature built in the same area to combat the same problem (1).
