Evidence of an early Roman timber building was encountered during archaeological investigations at St Martin's Lodge in 2013. Located in the canabae legionis, this area is currently poorly understood with limited archaeological remains discovered from a small number of sites. The evidence here suggests and early Roman phase of activity dating to the late first to early second century AD.
The evidence consisted of a layer [244] of reddish brown and yellowish brown clay with a ridge of daub walling aligned southwest to northeast along with a a red sandstone and tile post pad [261], a puddled clay floor [262], a soft sandy silt layer [264] and a second river cobble floor surface that was not investigated. These features were sealed by a deposit [260] tentatively interpreted as a demolition deposit.
