Evidence of an enclosure ditch was encountered during archaeological investigations at St Martin's Lodge in 2013. Located in the canabae legionis, this area is currently poorly understood with limited archaeological remains discovered from a small number of sites. The evidence here suggests and early Roman phase of activity dating to the late first to early second century AD.
The evidence consisted of an enclosure ditch measuring approximately 0.42m wide and 0.16m deep. The first leg of the ditch was orientated north-east to south-west before turning a rounded corner to orientate north north west and south south east. Although dating evidence was limited, it would appear that this ditch was contemporary with the early Roman road (CHER 8649) but predated the mid second century replacement road surface (CHER 8652).
