Evidence of a palaeochannel dating to the Roman period was encountered during archaeological investigations at St Martin's Lodge in 2013. Located in the canabae legionis, this area is currently poorly understood with limited archaeological remains discovered from a small number of sites.

The evidence comprises the northern edge of a palaeochannel infilled sometime in the Roman period. The fill [deposit 141] was dark grey brown soft silty clay with frequent sandstone, charcoal and ceramic building material. The channel appears to have been approximately 6m in width on an east-west alignment.
