Evidence of four pits, tentatively interpreted as grave cuts were encountered during archaeological investigations at St Martin's Lodge in 2013. Located in the canabae legionis, this area is currently poorly understood with limited archaeological remains discovered from a small number of sites. The evidence here suggests and early Roman phase of activity dating to the late first to early second century AD.

The evidence consisted of a group four sub-rectangular cuts [266] recorded at the base of the excavated area, however they were not excavated in detail as the lay below the level of development impact. They have been preserved in situ. The pits were approximately 1m in length on a south south west to north north east alignment. Their tapered shape and curved edges suggested they were grave cuts, however, no evidence of human remains were noted at this level. The cuts were sealed by layer [250] that also sealed the early Roman road (CHER 8649).
