Description

Further evaluation was carried out at Witter Place/Canal side by Earthworks Archaeology in 2002. Structures, pits and associated featues relating to post medieval tanning activity were recorded, along with a possible Civil War ditch, remains of working class nineteenth century terraced housing, and traces of medieval bell casting. (1-2). As part of the archaeological work, and due to the water-logged conditions on site, a comprehensive programme of environmental sampling was undertaken. The excavations revealed a multi-period site dating from the Roman period, however, due to the scale of the site, the sampling strategy targeted features associated with the Civil War Ditch and the post medieval tanning industry. In addition, material from two Roman features was chosen for assessment. A series of reports have been produced as part of the environmental sampling. (3-7)
