Full Description
Archaeological investigations at Canalside in 2001 and 2002 have identified traces of iron smithing in the area. The evidence was recovered from trench 3 of the 2001 phase of evaluation and consisted of a chimney [350], the flue side walls and firebrick of a smithing hearth along with a dark ashy deposit that may represent rake out from the hearth.
Dating of the smithy was problematic, however, as it is not marked on cartographic sources and appears to be part of the flour mill [CHER 10962). Quantities of iron slag were recovered from the site. (2)
