Description

Archaeological investigations on Duke Street in 2002 in advance of proposals to redevelop the site (1). The aim of the work was to assess the potential impact of the development on any surviving below ground archaeological features. Investigation revealed some evidence for prehistoric activity with more significant occupation evidence for the Roman period with a large rectangular timber building and several associated features recovered from the site. Medieval evidence appears to be limited to rubbish pits as the site remained marginal until the eighteenth century when a series of terraced houses were constructed along the street frontage (1).
