Full Description
Several post medieval pits were recorded during archaeological investigations to the rear of Duke Street in 2002. The evidence consisted of a sub rectangular pit feature [Context 9] containing quantities of clay tobacco pipe dating to the period 1640-1680 in the upper fills. The lower fills of the pit contained quantities of water worn cobbles, Roman tile and lime mortar. Although its original function was uncertain, the evidence suggests it was deliberately back filled in the late 17th century with domestic rubbish. A second pit [Context 13/29] was cut into the fill of a ditch containing fragments of stone and 17th-18th century pottery.
A linear feature [Context 49], interpreted as a ditch on a northwest-southwest alignment was also identified, although the primary fill contained Roman material the upper fills produced pottery of a 17th-18th century dated and was interpreted as a property boundary ditch. (1)
