Full Description
A short length of a disturbed sandstone structure, tentatively interpreted as a drain or a sewer was identified during an archaeological evaluation at 14 – 18 Duke St., Chester, in 2002 (1). This structure was subsequently covered over by a layer of silty sand (itself interpreted as a cultivation soil, CHER 8117) that contained sherds of pottery manufactured at Holt between AD 90 – 130, suggesting that the feature was associated with the timber phase of the Roman legionary fortress to the north of the site (1).
