Source/Archive record SCH7170 - Archaeological Evaluation Report Odeon Theatre, Chester

An archaeological evaluation was carried out at the Chester Odeon site on Northgate Street, Chester. The work was carried out by L - P Archaeology on behalf of Cheshire West and Chester Borough Council during March and April 2013. Twenty-seven trenches were excavated which were located within the Odeon building, the car park to the rear of Commerce House, 49 Northgate Street and the external areas between the buildings. Surviving Roman structural remains were recorded within several trenches located to the north of the Odeon building and the remains of the Roman road were recorded in the centre of the building. Medieval structural remains were recorded in the south and east of the Odeon building. Post medieval deposits were recorded across the site and infilled modern cellars were present on the Northgate frontage. The results have provided sufficient information to inform the proposed building design and reduce impact on the surviving significant archaeological remains
