Full Description
Traces of two phases of a Roman legionary barrack block was recorded during archaeological investigations by Mr Petch at Folliot House in 1955 separated by a brief period of dereliction (CHER 8511). The earliest evidence dated to the early second century and appears to date to the first phase of stone construction.
The evidence comprised two wall foundations on a north-south alignment in trenches 4 & 6 and a third wall on an east-west alignment in trench 2. A single pit was recovered to the west of the wall in trench 4. (1)
The evidence, although slight was interpreted as the southern end of a north-south aligned barrack block. The wall in trench 6 appears to be that of the east external wall, while the wall in trench 4 appears to be the central dividing wall. (1)
Archaeological investigations at the Odeon Cinema in 2013 also recorded evidence associated with barrack building. Test pit 7 uncovered the southern end of trench 2 from 1955. Robber trenches associated with the barrack building were then encountered in test pits 7 and 8 along with an occupation layer containing mid 2nd century pottery. (6)
