Summary

Archaeological investigations at the Odeon Cinema in 2013 encountered the remains of a north-south aligned road of a probable Roman date between two barrack blocks at the northern end of the fortress.

Full Description

Archaeological investigations at the Odeon Cinema in 2013 identifed the possible remains of a north-south aligned Roman road to the east of barrack B (CHER 8508) and barrack A adjacent to the via Decumana.

The evidence consisted of a layer [context 1508] sealed by a compact surface [1511] containing crushed sandstone, worn pebbles and Roman ceramic building material. The layer was encountered at a depth of 1.2m below ground level.
