Full Description

Archaeological investigations at the Odeon Cinema in 2013 identified the remains of an east-west oriented road thought to be the Via Quintana.

The evidence comprised a metalled surface identified in test pit 5 and 5a at the western end of the cinema and again in test pit 33 some 13m to the east. In test pit 5 and 5a, the road appeared to be 3.5m in width and contained a number of fragments of glass, animal bone and pottery of a mid second century date or later.

In test pit 33 the road was again identified, this time along with a stone robbing trench also aligned east-west along the centre of the road. It was suggested by the author of the report that this trench was located on the same alignment as the channel cut feature previously discovered by Newstead in the 1930s (CHER 8513/3).
