Full Description

<1> Cheshire County Council, 1992-1995, Cheshire Past, Issue 1, p.10-11, Jones G D B, 1991 (Newsletter). SCH870.

Trench in Pleasant Street produced evidence of multiple timber buildings, forming part of a row of barracks flanking the western defences of the fort. Defences therefore lie on the west side of Pleasant Street. The main alignment of the buildings ran E-W across the limited area available for excavation. Width of first phase structures was c.6.5m. Expansion in second phase, seen in larger scale of construction trenches. First phase structures appeared to be the junction between the centurion's block and the start of the verandah and contubernia (barrack-rooms) of the barrack, while in second phase the verandah seems to have been eliminated. This interpretation is tentative because of the depth of early modern disturbance (including a series of stave-lined wells) which removed evidence for latest phase on site, which appeared to be unrelated to the earlier phases

Report of assessment of the archaeological archive for Roman Northwich excavations between 1974 and 1990, including the excavations at Pleasant Street, excavated by Prof Barri Jones, University of Manchester, 1990. Excavations comprised a single T‐shaped trench. The precise location of this excavation, in the car park behind the current TESCO store on Chester Road is difficult to define. It lies within the western third of the auxiliary fort and located foundation trenches for timber buildings.

In 2010 construction works occurred at the rear of 41-43 Chester road as part of their conversion to a new retail store (Tesco Metro). Two visits were made to the site during the groundworks but no evidence either of Roman features or artefacts in the spoil were encountered.
